The Disaster Radio Team (DRT) focuses on communications during emergency incidents. Every DRT volunteer is an FCC-licensed amateur radio operator or ham. Learn more about how to get your own ham radio license.
The DRT maintains a radio communications network throughout the Canyon and a radio room at TCEP’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC). The team’s objective is to gather field reports and provide accurate and timely information to the EOC during a disaster. Some team members are also Red Cross-trained to perform structure damage assessments.
When TCEP’s EOC is activated, the DRT is responsible for communicating critical updates to the public every hour over FRS radio channel 15. These “Top-of-the-Hour” FRS reports give residents who may have lost all traditional phone, TV and Internet communications a way to learn about evacuation orders and other important information.
The DRT welcomes both experienced radio operators and newbies anxious to learn. We can provide guidance in helping you get licensed and then a helping hand to get you comfortable using and honing your radio skills. We even have a loaner radio program so you can get the feel of ham radio operation before you buy your hardware.
